As new medical technologies are developed in response to emerging health issues like the Covid-19 pandemic, researchers and biopharmaceutical manufacturers can suddenly require huge steps up in their process liquid and buffer manufacturing capacities. Thermo Fisher Scientific’s site at Inchinnan, Scotland helps at this point, providing the ability to outsource to their ready-to-go large-volume liquid (LVL) bioprocessing facilities.
The global response to Covid-19 demanded enormous volumes of specific, newly-developed liquid media. In response, T-SQUARED worked with Thermo Fisher Scientific to design, construct, fit-out and validate an entirely new LVL facility from the ground up, on a brownfield site beside their existing building – increasing their total manufacturing capacity by 70%.
This complex project houses two 10,000 litre glass lined vessels for the manufacture of corrosive and standard buffers and one 5,000 litre stainless steel vessel for the manufacture of alcohol and standard buffers, plus a major upgrade to their Water for Injection (WFI) system to ensure a guaranteed supply of high-quality pure water, with room for further expansion factored into the facility’s design to cope with global product demand.
We bring the right people to the table, at the right time, to solve problems and make decisions. That keeps our projects flexible, and in this case flexibility was essential. As the global pandemic developed, so did Thermo Fisher Scientific’s needs. Our multidisciplinary design team kept pace to update the design and maintain progress on the new facility
